On May 13-15, 1908, state leaders met with Teddy Roosevelt and other conservationists from around the states. Roosevelt started the meeting with a speech titled, “Conservation as a National Duty”. Meaning that no single person or entity is responsible for conservation efforts.
The point of it is that we were becoming great in a material sense and use our resources lavishly. However, he went on to explain that we needed to put more effort into giving back to the world that we were taking from.
In, 2010, another speech took place along with a meeting. In it, climate change and its threat to our forests was a topic, but it was also about how we could use some of it to our advantage. However, we must also focus on restoration so that ecological functions are always present. This included collaboration with several conservations including the Environmental Quality Improvement Program.
Today, we should still strive to make our forests stronger, not weaker. Allowing them to be weak means that we could run out of water for fish and forests for wild game. We could be shooting ourselves in the foot. Will you take part in the protection of our forests?
